Coral Springs Girls Travel Basketball Team Ranks Number 1 in the State – Coral Springs Talk

By: Matt Rothman

It’s been an incredible run for a local girls’ travel basketball team in Coral Springs, currently ranked number one.

The team, called Bad Girls 16U, has won 12 of the 14 tournaments throughout the season and had two second-place finishes. Their last two victories came in the US Amateur State Championship in Port Charlotte, where the team went 4-0. In their final game, they defeated the Jupiter Jaguars 61- 44. They also are coming off a win in a tournament at Coral Springs City Gym on Sunday.

Head Coach Don Colloway, a Coral Springs resident for 35 years, wants them to play competitively.

“Our team is consists of great girls,” said Coach Calloway. “Our number one priority is grades. On the court, though, we are winning by lots of offense and terrific defense.”

Offensively, ninth-grader Ermani Lewis averages an incredible 24 points per game. Both sophomores Carissa Marthy and Meadow Henningsen are averaging double figures.

The Bad Girls also have freshman McKenzie Topkin, who is a double-double machine. She averages over ten rebounds and assists per game.

Defensively, Rhael Sayers, Jourdin Gayle, Madisun Hill, Emilee Carreras, Cayla Kravitz are key, according to Coach Calloway, in keeping their opponents off the board.

They are also hoping for the return of sophomore Cynthia Pierre-Louis in their next tournament after recovering from a torn ACL. The Bad Girls will travel to Orlando on July 23-25 for the National Tournament.

The basketball team also asks for help with funding for practices and tournaments for the rest of the season.
