PHILADELPHIA – Josh Nickelberry, a 6-4, 205-pound guard who played the past two seasons at Louisville, has signed an aid agreement to attend La Salle University, head coach Ashley Howard announced Tuesday. Nickelberry has three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2021-22 campaign.
“We are looking forward to adding Josh Nickelberry to our program,” Howard said. “Coming from Louisville, he has an understanding of what it takes to be a part of a big-time college basketball program and to work at a high level. He’s extremely talented, a gifted scorer, and someone we expect to make an impact from day one.”
During his time with the Cardinals, he appeared in 24 games and scored 37 points, including a three pointer in seven of his nine games off the bench his second year. Nickelberry missed a total of 16 games over the course of his two seasons due to injury.
Prior to signing with the Cardinals, Nickelberry averaged 26.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game as a senior at Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville, N.C. During his senior campaign, he led his squad to a 20-14 record and a runner-up position in the 1A NCISAA North Carolina state championship. The 6-4 guard scored 19 points in the title game as his team was the first in school history to reach the state championship game.
At the conclusion of his senior season, Nickelberry earned NCISAA and AP All-State honors, just one vote shy of a unanimous selection on the AP team. He also garnered All-USA North Carolina Boys Basketball Team laurels and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. In total, Nickelberry tallied 2,904 points in high school, to finish as the second-leading scorer all-time in North Carolina high school basketball.
As a junior, Nickelberry averaged 24.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. His performance aided Northwood Temple Academy to the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 1A championship, earning first team all-state honors.
Nickelberry began playing organized basketball as an eight-year-old and achieved his first dunk in the eighth grade. He played his eighth grade and freshman seasons at Northwood Temple, played his sophomore year at Trinity Christian, and returned to Northwood Temple for his final two seasons. He earned NCISAA 1A all-state honors as a sophomore at Trinity Christian when he averaged 18.0 points per game and reached double figures in all but three games in leading his team to the NCISAA 1A championship game.
Coming out of high school, Nickelberry was ranked No. 83 nationally in the ESPN 100, No. 96 by 247Sports.com, and No. 97 by Rivals.com. He considered North Carolina, NC State, Michigan, Xavier, and UConn, before ultimately choosing Louisville.
He participated with Game Elite Gold AAU team in Atlanta, driving five hours one way many weekends to practice and play with the squad.
Nickelberry’s father, Gerald, was a linebacker at Northern Illinois (1991-94), ranking sixth in career tackles and his seven career fumble recoveries is an NIU record. His mother, Jessie, was a track and volleyball athlete and is an Army veteran.
