Men’s Basketball to Participate in the 2021 Jacksonville Classic – Boston University Athletics

BOSTON – The Boston University men’s basketball team will fly south Thanksgiving week to the Sunshine State for three games as part of the 2021 Jacksonville Classic, the tournament’s organizers announced Thursday afternoon.

Led by 11th-year head coach Joe Jones, the Terriers will first open the Jax bracket at the UNF Arena in Jacksonville with a semifinal matchup against Northern Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 21 and then face either Sam Houston State or Little Rock on Monday, Nov. 22. BU will conclude the trip by visiting ACC member Florida State for the first time in program history on Wednesday, Nov. 24.

BU will be returning all five starters from last season’s squad, including All-Patriot League honorees Javante McCoy (16.1 ppg, 2.2 apg) and Walter Whyte (13.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg). Both Sukhmail Mathon (11.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Jonas Harper (8.1 ppg, 1.3 spg) received All-PL Defensive Team accolades for their efforts as well. They’ve helped the Terriers post a combined 28-24 record over the last two years, highlighted by a 2020 PL tournament title.

Coincidentally, the Terriers’ only other matchup with Northern Illinois (Mid-American Conference) was also held in Florida after they opened the 1999-00 season at the Doral/Florida International Tip-Off Classic. BU has never met Sam Houston State (Southland Conference) or Little Rock (Sun Belt Conference).

The Terriers are 1-1 all-time against Florida State after they posted an 84-69 victory at the 2002 Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson, Arizona. FSU won the first-ever meeting, 86-52, in the 1955 Charlotte (N.C.) Invitational.
