Earlier this summer, Roswell High School hired former Gateway Christian Academy coach Dan Smith as the next RHS girls basketball coach, replacing former coach Fernando Sanchez. Sanchez announced in the spring that he was leaving for a coaching opportunity in Hatch.

“I appreciate the Roswell selection committee selecting me as head coach,” Smith said. “This gives me a chance to give back to the community and coach the game I love.”

Among Smith’s basketball influences is legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. Smith, who is a 1991 graduate of RHS, plans to teach the fundamentals of the game and in addition help young athletes develop as people and students. He will teach biology in addition to coaching, and also will remain a practicing chiropractor.

On the court, look for an aggressive man-to-man defense and on offense a lot of motion, with and without the ball. A lot of what Smith does this year will depend on the athletes he has and what they bring to the table.

Smith said he wants to use this year to develop his coaching philosophy — to teach and lay the foundation for how the Lady Coyotes will play in the future. He is less worried about wins than about building character.

“I believe that winning will take care of itself,” Smith said. “If we just do the right things and do them right. I want the best for each girl that plays for me. I don’t define myself by winning or losing but by developing people and building solid relationships with people. I want my players to give me their best effort each time on the court.

“I’m excited for the upcoming season. I want to teach these players things that they can take away, the fundamentals and techniques … Foundations are how you build a successful life and business, day-by-day.”

Smith, who began his coaching career at New Mexico Military Institute, coached at Gateway for three years, leaving in 2019 after having made it to the postseason semifinals in his final season. That run ended with a 59-45 loss to Quemado.
