The Youngstown State women’s basketball team will play four home games and three road games during the non-conference portion of the 2021-22 season, Penguins head coach John Barnes announced on Thursday.
YSU will begin its 47th campaign at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, Nov. 9, on the opening day of the NCAA season, and the Penguins will also play road contests at Canisius and Penn State. Home games in the non-league slate will be against Akron, Long Island, Davis & Elkins and Point Park.
The game against the Eagles will be just the second time in Barnes’ nine seasons that YSU will play its season opener on the road. Youngstown State will host its home opener against Akron on Nov. 15, resuming a regular series with the Zips that took a pause in 2020-21 due to the pandemic. YSU will then play two its first Horizon League games before hosting LIU the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, for its first game against the Sharks since 2007.
The Penguins will play two Horizon League contests at Beeghly Center during the first week of December before heading back on the road for contests at Canisius on Dec. 8 and at Penn State on Dec. 12. The game against the Nittany Lions will be YSU’s second trip to State College since 2000.
Youngstown State will wrap up its non-league schedule against two non-Division I opponents before Christmas break. YSU will host Davis & Elkins on Dec. 17 and Point Park on Dec. 21, and Horizon League play will get in full swing on Dec. 30.
