The city of Roswell Recreation Department is looking for some volunteer coaches for its youth basketball program, ages 5-8, which will begin practices on Oct. 16 and will hold games starting Nov. 1.

Recreation Supervisor Damian Cheatem said that registration for this group of kids ended Friday, but that coaches are still needed. A Thursday news release by the city indicated that teams are expected to be set up by this coming week.

“We are looking forward to having a good season,” he said. “Everybody is anxious to get back to it because we haven’t done anything in a long time.”

The COVID-19 pandemic and related public health orders have restricted youth and sporting activities since March 2020.

Cheatem said that, when considering all four age groups that are involved in the city’s youth basketball league, 90 teams involving about 900 kids participate in a typical season. He added that Roswell has the largest youth basketball league in the state.
