Illinois Basketball: Ty Rodgers narrows list down to four teams – Writing Illini

The race to land 2022 superstar Ty Rodgers is getting tighter, and the Illinois basketball program is right in the mix.

There aren’t too many big-time recruits left on the board, but Rodgers is one of the big fish still remaining. With just about every team in the country wanting his services, Rodgers has decided to narrow the scope of his recruitment.

On Friday afternoon, Joe Tipton of TiptonEdits and On3Recruits tweeted out that Rodgers is now down to just four schools he will be choosing from. The four programs still on his list include Alabama, Memphis, Michigan State, and the Illini.

These four programs seemed like Rodgers’ top four for the past few months, but it is good to get confirmation of who he still has on his mind. But which program will end up winning out?

Illinois basketball should be up there in the lead for Rodgers.

I think all four teams mentioned above are legit contenders to land Rodgers. I don’t think there is a throw-in team that doesn’t have a chance.

Something that might hurt the Illini is the fact they were his first official visit out of the teams that are left. Rodgers visited Champaign back on September 16. His next official visit was to Michigan State on October 1. Memphis was Rodgers’ next official visit on October 14. He then capped off his official visits with a trip to Alabama this past weekend.

So, with over a month since his official visit, will this hurt the Illini?

I think Brad Underwood and the coaching staff have been good about visiting Rodgers even after the official visit. They aren’t letting up on showing him he is wanted.

What scares me the most is Memphis and Alabama. It seems that the Tigers have been pulling in some serious talent lately. They are doing a great job recruiting, and Penny Hardaway is a big attraction. I also think Alabama is dangerous as they have snagged some big-time recruits away from the Illini.

At the end of the day, though, I think Illinois will win this recruitment. They have been all over Rodgers for numerous months. Rodgers seems to like the Illini as well. There is a strong connection between him and the coaching staff. I have said this for a while, but this is Illinois’ recruitment to lose.
