OVC Basketball Media Day – Coach McMahon Readies Team For 2021-22 Season – Murray State University Athletics – MSU GoRacers

Nationally, there is a common feeling for every team at every level. The 2021-22 college basketball season is arriving like a breath of fresh air.

A year ago, it was unclear when the 2020-21 season would begin and how many games could be played. The season was delayed for two weeks and the Racers finally played their season opener on Nov. 29 and were eventually limited to less than a full season at 26 total games.

Coach McMahon was speaking at Ohio Valley Conference Media Day that was conducted virtually. The Racer coach took questions from the media in the Hall of Champions at the CFSB Center on a Zoom meeting. McMahon is the dean of men’s basketball coaches in the OVC as he enters his seventh season as head coach and 11th season total after he assisted Coach Steve Prohm from 2011-15.

“We’re looking forward to our season and we have a very talented group,” said McMahon, whose team was picked third behind Belmont and Morehead State in the OVC preseason predictions on Tuesday. “We had a lot of fun this last summer being able to participate in those team-building opportunities. All of things we like to do off the court, like having meals together, going out on beautiful Kentucky Lake and those type of things. Getting back to that this summer was very important for us as we build the chemistry in our locker room

The excitement is growing as the season draws near and fans are allowed to come back to the Racers’ home court at the CFSB Center where the Racers are 73-15 (.829) overall in McMahon’s previous six seasons and 43-10 (.811) in OVC play.

“Our fan base is excited, Murray, Kentucky is excited,” McMahon added. “The players, the coaches, the fans, to get back to that passion and the amazing home court we have here, it’s easy to see why the CFSB Center is one of the top-12 home courts in all of college basketball.Matt McMahon

Selected to the All-OVC Preseason Team, everyone knows the dynamic duo of Tevin Brown and KJ Williams will be the most recognizable faces of the Racer team in 2020-21. Other returners for the Racers include guards Dionte Bostick, Justice Hill, Jackson Sivills, DaQuan Smith and Rod Thomas. Front line returners include Nicholas McMullen and Matt Smith. MSU has five newcomers to the squad. Guards Carter Collins and Trae Hannibal joined the Racers as transfers from Davidson and South Carolina. Forwards include DJ Burns from Southern, Elijah Farr from Olney Central and Jordan Skipper-Brown from Eastern Illinois.

The first month of Murray State’s 97th season of college basketball begins with an exhibition game (Nov. 1) at home against Brescia, followed by the season opener at the CFSB Center (Nov. 9) against Cumberland. After MSU hosts Bellarmine (Nov. 13), they hit the road for the first time to Illinois State (Nov. 16). The Racers play three games Thanksgiving Week at the Naples (FL) Invitational (Nov. 22-24) where they meet East Tennessee and then either Missouri State or Long Beach. The other teams in the event are Kent State, James Madison, Wright State and George Washington.

The 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament will be held March 2-5 at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana, the fifth-straight year the event has been held at the venue.
