EU court deals blow to football Super League in complaint against UEFA – POLITICO Europe

The EU’s top court will not expedite the European Super League’s complaint against UEFA over the organization of international club football competitions in Europe, according to multiple officials briefed on a legal letter issued by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

A court in Madrid had asked the ECJ to consider whether UEFA, European football’s governing body, breached EU competition law by blocking top European football clubs from creating a breakaway Super League.

But the ECJ letter, dated July 8, informed the Super League and UEFA that the Madrid court’s request for an accelerated judicial procedure has been rejected.

Despite the swift collapse of the Super League project in April, three clubs — Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus — remain committed to the scheme.

The procedural decision deals the clubs a blow as any hope of a quick ruling on their complaint has disappeared. The complaint claims that UEFA and FIFA have a monopoly on the organization and authorization of international competitions.

According to the ECJ letter, the deadline for interested parties to submit observations on the Super League complaint has been set at October 18.

Based on the political backlash from European leaders when the Super League was conceived, observations provided by EU member countries are likely to be negative.

It is unclear what the procedural decision means for the disciplinary proceedings started by UEFA against the three clubs, but which were halted after an injunction from the Madrid court.
