Men’s Basketball Makes 2021-22 Debut in Monday Exhibition – Western Carolina University – catamountsports.com

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina fans can get their first look at the 2021-22 Catamount men’s basketball team on Monday night as WCU welcomes Campbellsville-Harrodsburg to Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center for a 7 p.m. exhibition contest.

Admission to the contest between the Pioneers and Catamounts is free of charge with general admission seating except for the floor seats and specially marked locations. Gates open at 6 p.m. with a clear bag policy in effort. Fans are encouraged to review Things to Know Before You Go information as well as the parking and clear bag documents located on the right column.

Live audio coverage from the Catamount Sports Network, as well as live stats links are available on CatamountSports.com.

Monday’s exhibition contest is the first for new WCU head coach Justin Gray, who became the 19th head coach in program history in April following the departure of Mark Prosser for Winthrop. Gray, who had a highly successful playing career at Wake Forest and spent a dozen years playing professionally at an international level, helped lead Winthrop to the 2020-21 Big South Conference title as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance. Gray selected longtime college basketball coach Jayson Gee as his associate head coach and tabbed Brian Graves and Zack Freesman as assistant coaches to complete his inaugural staff in Cullowhee.

Among the familiar faces returning for the Catamounts are juniors Tyler Harris and Travion McCray who have the most on-court experience in a WCU uniform. Those two are flanked by sophomores Josh Massey and Brad Halvorsen who also return from the previous season. An athletic swing forward, Harris saw action in all 27 games and averaged 6.3 points while McCray started nine of 13 games played at the point and averaged just over nine points per game.

Joining the Catamounts this season are a blend of junior college transfers, graduate transfers, and true freshmen. WCU brought in four junior college transfers including third-team NJCAA All-America Marvin Price (Salt Lake CC) and NJCAA Honorable Mention All-America selection Vonterius Woolbright (Lawson State CC), along with Marlow Gilmore (Dodge City CC) and Madison Monroe (Independence CC).

Redshirt junior Joe Petrakis arrived in Cullowhee after playing for Big 12 member Kansas State in 11 games last season, while graduate transfer Cam Bacote joined the Catamounts from Indiana State. Also among the Division I transfers is graduate student Nicholas Robinson who headed south from Valparaiso at the guard position.

A pair of freshmen in Marcus Banks (Hampton, Va.) and KJ Odour begin their collegiate careers at WCU with Banks arriving after closing out his prep career at Fork Union Military Academy and Odour prepping at Spire Academy in Ohio after moving to the United States from Kisumu, Kenya.

Campbellsville-Harrodsburg, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), opened its season at the Champion Classic hosted by Champion Christian College last weekend. The Pioneers are coming off a 12-11 season a year ago.

WCU opens the 2021-22 regular season at home on Tues., Nov. 9, hosting Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the women’s basketball team, who open their season against Emory & Henry at 4:00 p.m.
