Brown Joins Women’s Basketball Staff – UNCWsports.com

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Barefoot has announced the addition of Keyana Brown to the Seahawks’ staff as Director of Operations.

Brown, a 2018 Virginia State graduate, joins the Seahawks after spending last year as a graduate assistant for the Valdosta State women’s basketball program.

“I am so excited to join the Seahawk family at UNCW,” Brown said. “I made great memories playing for Coach Barefoot at Old Dominion and I am excited to learn from her and her infectious energy while continuing to grow in the game. I am ready to hit the ground running.”

During her time at Valdosta State, Brown assisted with many aspects of the Blazers’ program, including coaching, team travel, academics, scheduling, social media and equipment needs.

Brown spent one year as a media relations assistant at the University of Maryland, serving as the primary contact for the Terrapins’ softball team and working with women’s basketball and men’s soccer. She also served as a media relations intern at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 2018-19.

A three-year letter winner at Old Dominion, Brown was a two-time team captain who led the Lady Monarchs to a pair of winning seasons. The Williamsburg, Va., native ranked third on the team in scoring with a 7.3 average during the 2015-16 season en route to receiving “Sixth Woman of the Year” recognition.

Brown transferred to Virginia State for her senior season and helped the Trojans set a school record with a 15-0 start. She averaged 9.4 points per game, shot 41.9 percent from the field and paced the team with 18 blocked shots.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Keyana to UNCW,” said Barefoot, the Seahawks’ fifth-year coach. “She is a dynamic individual who was I fortunate enough to coach and see her demonstrate her winning ways as a leader on and off the floor.

“Our search committee was impressed with Keyana’s organization, background and accomplishments at Maryland and Valdosta State. Her passion for the game is unmatched and her commitment to winning in all aspects of life, including in the classroom, on the court and in the community, will inspire student-athletes and assist us to instill that winning culture here at UNCW.”
